Rose essential oil — rose otto, steam-distilled from Rosa damascena petals in Bulgaria and Turkey, or rose absolute, solvent-extracted — is the most precious aromatic in cosmetics, requiring several thousand kilograms of petals per kilogram of oil. Its citronellol, geraniol, and phenylethyl alcohol carry antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activity documented in pharmacological reviews [1, 2]; rose extracts protected human skin fibroblasts and showed anti-inflammatory activity in vitro [3]; and transdermal rose oil produced measurable relaxation — lower breathing rate, blood pressure, and arousal — in a human study [4]. Rose oil contains a small amount of methyl eugenol, a restricted constituent that limits leave-on use to roughly 0.6% [5], and several labeled allergens. ORY® uses it as a luxury signature note; rose geranium and rose hydrosol cover higher-volume rose positioning.

What is Rose Essential Oil made of?

Rose otto is steam-distilled from fresh petals (yield ~0.02–0.03%); rose absolute is solvent-extracted (higher yield, richer scent). Composition [1, 5]:

    • Citronellol (20–45%), geraniol (10–20%), nerol (5–10%): Rosy alcohols; antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory; labeled allergens.
    • Phenylethyl alcohol (up to 3% in otto; 60% in absolute): Honey-rose note; antimicrobial.
    • Rose oxide, β-damascenone, β-ionone (traces): Aroma-defining trace compounds.
    • Stearoptenes (waxes, in otto): Cause solidification when cool; harmless.
    • Methyl eugenol (0.5–3%): Restricted constituent; sets the dermal limit (~0.6% leave-on for otto and absolute per Tisserand/IFRA) [5].

What skin type is best suited for Rose Essential Oil?

Rose oil is a luxury note for most ORY® skin types at low levels:

    • Mature: Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support [3]; the classic luxury anti-aging aromatic.
    • Dry: Rose-scented rich creams and facial oils (0.1–0.3%).
    • Sensitive: Traditionally soothing; ≤0.1% and patch test (allergens).
    • Normal: Signature face and body oils.
    • Combination: Light rose serums.
    • Oily: Low-level in light carriers or solubilized toners.
    • Acne-prone: Mild antimicrobial; rose hydrosol is the better choice.

What hair type is best suited for Rose Essential Oil?

Rose oil adds luxury scent and antioxidant support to hair oils:

    • Oily scalp: Fragrance role; pair with geranium or rosemary for scalp function.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Antimicrobial support in shampoos and pre-shampoo scalp oils.
    • Dry or damaged: Aromatic addition to hair oils (lengths and ends).
    • Straight, wavy, curly, coily: Fragrance and scalp-comfort addition at low levels for all textures.
    • Color-treated: Low-level use; avoid the first 48 hours after coloring.
    • Sensitive scalp: Use at the lowest end of the range; patch test.
    • Mature or thinning: Scalp-massage oils (with rosemary and lavender) for a healthy scalp environment.

What are the benefits of Rose Essential Oil?

Rose essential oil’s benefits are supported by reviews, cell studies, and a human study [1–4]:

    • Antioxidant: Rose oil and extracts scavenge free radicals and protect fibroblasts [3].
    • Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammatory mediators [1, 3].
    • Antimicrobial: Citronellol, geraniol, and phenylethyl alcohol inhibit microbes [1, 2].
    • Relaxation: Transdermal rose oil lowered arousal and improved calm in volunteers [4].
    • Skin conditioning: Traditional for tone, radiance, and dryness.
    • Luxury natural fragrance: The pinnacle of floral perfumery.
    • Hair luster and scent: Luxury hair oils.
