Coconut oil is the solid-at-room-temperature fat of Cocos nucifera, dominated by lauric acid, which gives it two clinically demonstrated strengths. On skin, virgin coconut oil outperformed mineral oil as a moisturizer for dry skin (xerosis) in a randomized double-blind trial [1] and improved pediatric atopic dermatitis severity and barrier measures [2], with lauric acid providing antimicrobial activity against acne and skin bacteria. On hair, coconut oil is unique among common oils in penetrating the fiber and reducing protein loss during washing and combing — an effect not seen with mineral or sunflower oil [3]. In soap, coconut oil is the foundation of hardness and big, bubbly lather. Its one significant drawback is a high comedogenic rating (~4), which makes it a poor facial oil for acne-prone skin.

What is Coconut Oil made of?

Coconut oil is pressed from fresh coconut meat (virgin) or dried copra (then refined, bleached, deodorized). Composition [1, 3]:

    • Lauric acid (45–52%): Antimicrobial medium-chain saturated fat; the basis of lather and hair penetration.
    • Myristic (16–21%), palmitic (7–10%), caprylic and capric (5–10%) acids: Saturated; hardness and cleansing.
    • Oleic (5–8%) and linoleic (1–2%) acids: Small unsaturated fraction.
    • Polyphenols and vitamin E (virgin grade): Antioxidant.
    • Comedogenic rating ~4; shelf life 2+ years (very stable); melts at ~24 °C.
    • Soap data: SAP ~0.183 g NaOH/g (76 °F grade); hard bar, big fluffy lather, cleansing; 20–30% of oils (up to 100% with high superfat).

What skin type is best suited for Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is a body-care oil; facial use depends on skin type:

    • Dry: Clinically superior to mineral oil for dry skin [1]; excellent body moisturizer.
    • Sensitive: Improved atopic dermatitis in children [2]; antimicrobial.
    • Normal: Body oil, balms, lip care.
    • Mature: Body care; antioxidant (virgin).
    • Combination: Body only.
    • Oily: Avoid on the face (comedogenic ~4).
    • Acne-prone: Avoid on the face despite lauric acid’s antibacterial action; fine in rinse-off cleansers and body products.

What hair type is best suited for Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil is the hero oil for protein retention and pre-wash protection:

    • Dry or damaged: Penetrates the fiber; reduces protein loss and hygral fatigue [3]; pre-shampoo treatment.
    • Curly and coily: Classic sealing and pre-poo oil.
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Reduces protein loss during washing [3].
    • Straight and wavy: Pre-wash treatment only; heavy as leave-in.
    • Oily scalp: Lengths only.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Antimicrobial lauric acid; pre-shampoo scalp treatment.
    • Sensitive scalp, mature or thinning: Pre-shampoo use; some find it too heavy or protein-stiffening — alternate with moisture treatments.

What are the benefits of Coconut Oil?

Coconut oil’s benefits are supported by randomized trials and hair-science studies [1–3]:

    • Dry-skin moisturization: Superior to mineral oil in a randomized trial [1].
    • Atopic dermatitis support: Improved severity and barrier in children [2].
    • Antimicrobial: Lauric acid and monolaurin inhibit bacteria and fungi.
    • Hair protein retention: Penetrates the cortex; reduces protein loss [3].
    • Occlusion and protection: Solid film protects chapped skin and lips.
    • Stability: Very long shelf life.
    • Soap hardness and lather: The foundation of bar hardness and bubbly lather.
    • Cleansing: Oil-cleansing and balm base.
