Avocado oil is pressed from the flesh (not the seed) of Persea americana and is one of the richest, most penetrating carrier oils — high in oleic acid, with unusually large amounts of unsaponifiable matter (sterols, vitamins A, D, and E, squalene, and chlorophyll) that give it repair and anti-inflammatory value beyond its fatty acids. Avocado oil promoted collagen synthesis and wound healing in animal studies [1], and reviews list it among plant oils with barrier-repair and anti-inflammatory activity [2, 3]. Its deep green, buttery character suits very dry, mature, and sun-damaged skin, dry hair and scalps, and rich soap and cosmetic formulations.

What is Avocado Oil made of?

Avocado oil is cold-pressed from dried fruit pulp (unrefined, green) or refined (pale, odorless). Composition [1, 3]:

    • Oleic acid (60–70%): Deeply penetrating emollient.
    • Palmitic (12–20%), palmitoleic (3–9%), linoleic (10–15%) acids: Structural and barrier.
    • Unsaponifiables (2–6%): β-sitosterol, vitamins A, D, E, squalene, lecithin, chlorophyll: Repair, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant.
    • Comedogenic rating ~2–3; shelf life 12 months.
    • Soap data: SAP ~0.133 g NaOH/g; conditioning, creamy lather, adds mildness; 5–20% of oils.

What skin type is best suited for Avocado Oil?

Avocado suits dry, mature, and damaged skin best:

    • Dry: Deeply nourishing; the classic very-dry-skin oil.
    • Mature: Sterols and vitamins support collagen and repair [1].
    • Sensitive: Anti-inflammatory; eczema-prone and sun-damaged skin.
    • Normal: Rich night oil or body oil.
    • Combination: Dry zones only.
    • Oily: Too rich; use sparingly or avoid on the face.
    • Acne-prone: Moderately comedogenic; avoid on the face.

What hair type is best suited for Avocado Oil?

Avocado is a deep-conditioning oil for dry, thick, and coily hair:

    • Dry or damaged: Avocado coats and softens the fiber, reducing moisture loss and mechanical breakage.
    • Curly and coily: Sealing oil over water-based leave-ins (LOC/LCO method).
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Replenishes lipids stripped by chemical services.
    • Straight and wavy: Too heavy for fine hair; reserve for thick, dry, or coily hair.
    • Oily scalp: Lengths and ends only.
    • Sensitive scalp: Neutral carrier for scalp actives; patch test.
    • Dandruff-prone, mature or thinning: Carrier for rosemary, peppermint, or tea tree scalp treatments.

What are the benefits of Avocado Oil?

Avocado oil’s benefits are supported by animal studies and reviews [1–3]:

    • Deep moisturization: Penetrating oleic acid and rich unsaponifiables.
    • Collagen and wound-healing support: Increased collagen and healing in animal models [1].
    • Anti-inflammatory: Sterols and vitamins calm irritation [2].
    • Barrier repair: Lipids and lecithin restore the barrier.
    • Antioxidant: Vitamins A, E, and chlorophyll.
    • Hair deep conditioning: Penetrates the fiber; softens coarse hair.
    • Soap: Creamy, mild, conditioning lather; natural green (unrefined).
    • Sun-damaged skin support: Traditional after-sun and repair oil.
