Saffron extract is prepared from the red stigmas of Crocus sativus, the world’s most precious spice, and carries a distinctive set of actives: the carotenoids crocin and crocetin, the aromatic safranal, and the bitter glycoside picrocrocin, plus kaempferol flavonoids. Saffron has centuries of use in Persian, Indian, and Moroccan beauty for radiance and even tone, and modern studies support it: crocin protects skin cells from UV-induced oxidative damage and collagen-degrading enzymes [1], saffron extract showed UV-absorbing and moisturizing effects in human volunteers [2], and reviews document broad antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity across its constituents [3, 4]. Saffron also inhibits tyrosinase, supporting brightening. Its cost dictates low, standardized use levels, positioned as a luxury antioxidant across ORY®‘s lines.

What is Saffron Extract made of?

Saffron extract is prepared by water or hydro-alcoholic extraction of dried stigmas, standardized to crocin (and sometimes safranal). Constituents [3, 4]:

Saffron is heavily adulterated; ORY® requires ISO 3632 Grade I saffron or standardized extract with verified crocin content.

    • Crocin (water-soluble carotenoid glycoside): Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, photoprotective; golden color.
    • Crocetin (lipophilic aglycone): Potent radical scavenger; oil-phase fraction.
    • Safranal (aromatic aldehyde): Antioxidant; characteristic aroma; volatile.
    • Picrocrocin: Bitter glycoside; antioxidant.
    • Kaempferol and quercetin glycosides: Supporting antioxidants.

What skin type is best suited for Saffron Extract?

Saffron extract is a radiance active for dull, uneven, and sun-stressed skin, suitable for all seven ORY® types:

    • Mature: Protects collagen from UV-induced enzymes; improves radiance [1].
    • Combination: Brightening for uneven tone.
    • Normal: Antioxidant glow maintenance.
    • Dry: Moisturizing effect reported in volunteers [2].
    • Sensitive: Anti-inflammatory; low levels.
    • Acne-prone: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory support for marks.
    • Oily: Water-soluble; light serums.

What hair type is best suited for Saffron Extract?

Saffron’s haircare role is a luxury antioxidant and traditional luster ingredient:

    • Mature or thinning: Antioxidant scalp support; traditional vitality tonic (cosmetic claims only).
    • Dry or damaged: Saffron-infused oils add luster.
    • Sensitive scalp: Anti-inflammatory support.
    • Color-treated: Antioxidant protection; faint golden tint at high levels.
    • Straight, wavy, curly, coily, oily scalp, dandruff-prone: Optional luxury addition.

What are the benefits of Saffron Extract?

Saffron’s benefits are supported by cell, animal, and human studies [1–4]:

    • Antioxidant: Crocin, crocetin, and safranal scavenge reactive oxygen species [3, 4].
    • Photoprotection: Reduced UV-induced damage in skin cells [1]; UV absorption in human testing [2].
    • Anti-aging: Inhibits collagen- and elastin-degrading enzymes [1].
    • Brightening: Tyrosinase inhibition; traditional radiance use.
    • Anti-inflammatory: Reduces inflammatory mediators.
    • Moisturizing: Hydration improvement in volunteers [2].
    • Scalp antioxidant and luster: Traditional hair tonic.
    • Natural golden color: Warm tint for cosmetics and soap.
