Alpha-bisabolol is a colorless, oil-soluble sesquiterpene alcohol and the principal soothing component of German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla). Most cosmetic bisabolol is distilled from the wood oil of the Brazilian candeia tree (Eremanthus erythropappus), which yields the same (-)-α-bisabolol molecule at high purity. It is prized for calming irritation, reducing redness, and speeding recovery of stressed skin, with laboratory and clinical evidence for anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, wound-healing, and penetration-enhancing activity [1, 2, 3]. Because it is stable, nearly odorless, and compatible with oils, emulsions, and soap, it is one of the most flexible soothing agents in the ORY® library — a natural partner to allantoin (water-soluble) as the oil-soluble half of a “calm” system.

What is Bisabolol made of?

Bisabolol (C₁₅H₂₆O) is a monocyclic sesquiterpene alcohol. Forms available to ORY®:

Sustainability note: candeia is harvested under Brazilian forestry management plans; ORY® should source certified material.

    • Natural (-)-α-bisabolol: Steam-distilled and fractionated from candeia wood oil (≥95% purity) or, in smaller quantities, from chamomile essential oil; the levorotatory form is the most biologically active [1].
    • Synthetic bisabolol: A racemic mixture of four isomers; less expensive and slightly less active; ORY® specifies natural (-)-α-bisabolol for performance.
    • Physical properties: Clear, viscous, oil-soluble liquid with a faint sweet floral scent; stable across pH 4–10 and normal processing temperatures.

What skin type is best suited for Bisabolol?

Alpha-bisabolol is suitable for all seven ORY® skin types and is a signature ingredient for reactive skin:

    • Sensitive: The core indication — reduces redness, stinging, and reactivity; supports rosacea-prone skin.
    • Acne-prone: Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial; calms active lesions and reduces post-acne redness [2].
    • Dry: Oil-soluble soother that fits emollient creams and balms; supports barrier recovery.
    • Mature: Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory support against inflammaging; may reduce UV-induced pigmentation.
    • Combination: Calms reactive areas in lightweight emulsions.
    • Oily: Use at 0.1–0.5% in gel-creams; non-comedogenic.
    • Normal: Daily comfort and after-sun care.

What hair type is best suited for Bisabolol?

Bisabolol brings its soothing action to the scalp in shampoos, conditioners, and leave-ins:

    • Sensitive scalp: Ideal — reduces itch, redness, and reactivity to surfactants and fragrance.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Anti-inflammatory support alongside salicylic acid, tea tree, or zinc pyrithione; helps counter the irritation of those actives.
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Soothes post-service scalp irritation.
    • Dry or damaged: Adds slip and softness in oil-phase conditioners.
    • Mature or thinning: Calms scalp inflammation that can accompany thinning.
    • Oily scalp, straight, wavy, curly, coily: Safe for all as a scalp-comfort ingredient.

What are the benefits of Bisabolol?

Alpha-bisabolol’s benefits are documented in pharmacological reviews and clinical models [1, 2, 3]:

    • Anti-inflammatory: Inhibits inflammatory mediators (e.g., leukotrienes, pro-inflammatory cytokines), reducing redness and swelling.
    • Soothing and anti-irritant: Reduces skin reactions to surfactants, acids, retinoids, and environmental stress.
    • Antimicrobial: Activity against acne-related and skin-surface bacteria and some fungi [1].
    • Wound healing: Promotes granulation and epithelialization in experimental models [3].
    • Penetration enhancement: Improves delivery of other actives through the stratum corneum.
    • Antioxidant: Scavenges free radicals; supports photoprotection.
    • Brightening support: Reported to reduce melanin synthesis in laboratory models — a mild tone-evening bonus.
    • Scalp comfort: Relieves itching and irritation in haircare.

Dual use across ORY® product lines

Alpha-bisabolol is oil-soluble, stable in alkaline conditions, and nearly odorless, so it can be added to every ORY® line, including cold-process soap.

Pros and cons of Bisabolol

Pros

Cons

    • Highly effective at low levels: 0.1–0.5% is usually sufficient.
    • Broad compatibility: Oil-soluble; stable in soap, emulsions, oils, and color cosmetics.
    • Natural origin: Chamomile/candeia-derived; fits botanical positioning.
    • Reduces irritation of actives: Improves tolerance of acids, retinol, tea tree oil, and benzoyl peroxide.
    • Pleasant, low odor: Does not interfere with fragrance design.
    • Cost: Natural (-)-α-bisabolol is a premium ingredient.
    • Sourcing: Candeia supply depends on managed harvesting; synthetic is an alternative but less active.
    • Mostly preclinical evidence: Strong pharmacological data; fewer large human trials than niacinamide or allantoin.
    • Oil-soluble: Needs an oil phase or solubilizer for water-based toners.
    • Rare sensitivity: Chamomile-allergic individuals (Asteraceae family) should patch test.

What is the best application of Bisabolol?

Bisabolol is a “quiet” ingredient best built into products a customer already uses:

    • Calming serum or cream: Daily AM/PM for sensitive, rosacea-prone, or post-procedure skin; pair with allantoin, Centella, and panthenol.
    • Acne products: Add to salicylic, tea tree, or benzoyl peroxide products to offset irritation.
    • Retinol and acid products: Include to improve tolerance during introduction.
    • After-sun: With aloe, zinc oxide, and allantoin.
    • Cleanser: Reduces surfactant irritation in facial and body washes.
    • Shampoo and scalp serum: For itchy, sensitive, or dandruff-prone scalps.
    • Soap: Sensitive-skin and baby bars.
    • Cosmetics: Redness-neutralizing foundations and lip balms.

Results vary by skin and scalp type, formulation, and use. Reactions to bisabolol are uncommon, but people allergic to plants in the daisy family (such as chamomile or ragweed) may be more likely to react, and any cosmetic can cause irritation, sometimes from other ingredients. Always patch test, follow label directions, and stop use if irritation occurs.
