Chamomile is one of the oldest medicinal flowers in the world and the source of two of ORY®‘s other calming ingredients — alpha-bisabolol and azulene. The whole-flower extract combines those terpenes with apigenin and other flavonoids that together reduce inflammation, itching, and redness and support wound healing [1, 2]. A clinical study of a chamomile cream in atopic eczema showed improvement comparable to a low-potency hydrocortisone preparation [3], and chamomile has been reviewed as one of the better-evidenced botanicals for dermatitis and skin irritation [1]. Water-, glycerin-, and oil-soluble forms let ORY® use chamomile in every product line; its principal caution is allergy in people sensitive to the daisy (Asteraceae) family [4].

What is Chamomile Extract made of?

Chamomile extract is made from dried flower heads by water/glycerin maceration, ethanol tincture, CO₂ extraction, oil infusion, or steam distillation (essential oil). Its constituents [1, 2]:

German chamomile (Matricaria) is richer in bisabolol and chamazulene; Roman chamomile (Anthemis) is richer in esters and gentler in scent — ORY® uses German chamomile for skin activity.

    • Alpha-bisabolol and bisabolol oxides: Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, wound-healing sesquiterpenes.
    • Chamazulene (from matricin): Blue anti-inflammatory formed during distillation.
    • Apigenin, luteolin, quercetin (flavonoids): Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and mildly tyrosinase-inhibiting.
    • Coumarins (umbelliferone, herniarin): Antimicrobial and antispasmodic.
    • Mucilage polysaccharides: Hydrating and soothing.

What skin type is best suited for Chamomile Extract?

Chamomile extract suits all seven ORY® skin types and is a first choice for reactive skin:

    • Sensitive: The primary indication — reduces redness, itching, and irritation [1, 3].
    • Dry: Infused oil and mucilage soothe and hydrate eczema-prone skin.
    • Acne-prone: Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial; calms lesions.
    • Mature: Flavonoid antioxidants and mild brightening (apigenin).
    • Combination: Water extracts in light serums.
    • Normal: Daily calming and antioxidant maintenance.
    • Oily: Glycerin extract in gels and toners.

What hair type is best suited for Chamomile Extract?

Chamomile is a classic haircare botanical for soothing scalps and brightening blonde hair:

    • Sensitive scalp: Calms itch, redness, and reactivity.
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Soothes post-service scalp; chamomile rinses traditionally enhance golden and blonde tones.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Anti-inflammatory and antifungal support.
    • Dry or damaged: Infused oil conditions scalp and hair.
    • Mature or thinning: Comfortable, healthy-scalp foundation.
    • Straight, wavy, curly, coily, oily scalp: Universal scalp-comfort addition; light water extracts for oily scalps.

What are the benefits of Chamomile Extract?

Chamomile’s benefits are supported by reviews and clinical studies [1–4]:

    • Anti-inflammatory: Bisabolol, chamazulene, and apigenin reduce inflammatory mediators and redness.
    • Eczema and dermatitis relief: Chamomile cream performed comparably to low-potency hydrocortisone in atopic eczema [3].
    • Wound healing: Promotes granulation and re-epithelialization.
    • Antioxidant: Flavonoids neutralize free radicals and protect against UV stress.
    • Antimicrobial: Activity against skin bacteria and fungi.
    • Mild brightening: Apigenin and related flavonoids inhibit tyrosinase modestly.
    • Scalp soothing and blonde brightening: Calms scalp; enhances golden tones.
