Chamomile — German (Matricaria chamomilla) or Roman (Chamaemelum nobile) — is the daisy-like flower behind ORY®‘s bisabolol, azulene, and chamomile-extract ingredients. This document covers the dried flower and its oil infusion, the form used in Build-Your-Own oils, balms, and soap. Steeping dried flowers in oil captures the lipophilic soothing terpenes (alpha-bisabolol, bisabolol oxides, and matricin) along with flavonoids such as apigenin, producing an infusion with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing activity documented in reviews [1, 2]. A chamomile cream performed comparably to low-potency hydrocortisone in atopic eczema [3]. The main caution is allergy in people sensitive to the daisy family [4].

What is Chamomile made of?

Dried chamomile flower heads infused in oil release [1, 2]:

German chamomile gives more bisabolol and chamazulene; Roman chamomile gives a sweeter, apple-like scent and ester-based calming — ORY® uses German for skin activity, Roman for aroma.

    • Alpha-bisabolol and bisabolol oxides A/B: Anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, wound-healing sesquiterpenes.
    • Matricin (converts to blue chamazulene with heat): Anti-inflammatory; gentle warm infusions may take on a faint blue-green tint.
    • Apigenin and other flavonoids (partially oil-soluble): Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory.
    • Coumarins (umbelliferone): Antimicrobial.
    • Carrier oil fatty acids and vitamin E: Emollient base.

What skin type is best suited for Chamomile?

Chamomile-infused oil suits all seven ORY® skin types and is a first choice for reactive skin:

    • Sensitive: Calms redness, itch, and reactivity; eczema-prone skin [3].
    • Dry: Infusion nourishes and soothes tight, flaky skin.
    • Mature: Antioxidant flavonoids; gentle eye-area oil.
    • Normal: Daily calming face or body oil.
    • Combination: Jojoba infusion on reactive zones.
    • Acne-prone: Anti-inflammatory; light carrier, sparing use.
    • Oily: Grapeseed infusion at low levels, or use the water extract.

What hair type is best suited for Chamomile?

Chamomile oil calms the scalp and chamomile rinses brighten blonde hair:

    • Sensitive scalp: Soothing pre-shampoo oil.
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Calms post-service scalp; enhances golden and blonde tones.
    • Dry or damaged: Conditions scalp and ends.
    • Dandruff-prone scalp: Anti-inflammatory and antifungal support.
    • Curly and coily: Light sealing oil.
    • Mature or thinning, straight, wavy: Scalp comfort.
    • Oily scalp: Ends only.

What are the benefits of Chamomile?

Chamomile’s benefits are supported by reviews and clinical work [1–4]:

    • Anti-inflammatory: Bisabolol, chamazulene, and apigenin reduce redness and swelling.
    • Eczema relief: Comparable to low-potency hydrocortisone in a clinical study [3].
    • Wound healing: Promotes re-epithelialization.
    • Antimicrobial: Activity against skin bacteria and fungi.
    • Antioxidant: Flavonoids protect against oxidative stress.
    • Emollient: Infused oil restores dry, irritated skin.
    • Scalp soothing and blonde brightening: Calms scalp; golden tone in rinses.
    • Soap mildness and aroma: Infusion and chamomile tea (as lye water) yield a gentle, lightly scented bar.
