Hemp seed oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) and is prized for a fatty-acid profile that closely mirrors the skin’s needs: roughly 55% linoleic (omega-6), 20% alpha-linolenic (omega-3), and a few percent of the rare gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) — a 3:1 omega-6:omega-3 ratio considered ideal. The seeds contain essentially no THC or CBD; hemp seed oil is a nutritional and barrier oil, not a cannabinoid product. A clinical study found dietary hemp seed oil improved dryness and itch in atopic dermatitis [1], and reviews document topical barrier-repair and anti-inflammatory benefits of polyunsaturated plant oils [2, 3]. Deep green, nutty, and non-comedogenic, it suits oily and eczema-prone skin alike, but oxidizes quickly and must be kept cold.

What is Hemp Seed Oil made of?

Hemp seed oil is cold-pressed from dehulled or whole seeds of low-THC industrial hemp. Composition [1, 2]:

    • Linoleic acid (50–60%, omega-6): Barrier-essential; acne-friendly.
    • Alpha-linolenic acid (15–25%, omega-3): Anti-inflammatory.
    • Gamma-linolenic acid (1–4%) and stearidonic acid: Rare anti-inflammatory fatty acids.
    • Oleic acid (10–15%), palmitic, stearic: Emollient and structural.
    • Vitamin E, chlorophyll (green color), phytosterols: Antioxidant.
    • Comedogenic rating 0; shelf life 6–9 months (refrigerate).
    • Soap data: SAP ~0.134 g NaOH/g; conditioning; ≤10–15% (rancidity risk).

What skin type is best suited for Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp seed suits oily, acne-prone, and eczema-prone skin especially:

    • Acne-prone: Non-comedogenic; linoleic-rich [3].
    • Oily: Light, fast-absorbing.
    • Sensitive: Omega-3/GLA anti-inflammatory support; eczema-prone skin [1].
    • Dry: Barrier lipids; blend with richer oils.
    • Combination: Balanced facial oil.
    • Mature: Antioxidant and barrier support.
    • Normal: Daily nutrition oil.

What hair type is best suited for Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp seed nourishes scalp and hair with essential fatty acids:

    • Dry or damaged: Hemp seed coats and softens the fiber, reducing moisture loss and mechanical breakage.
    • Curly and coily: Sealing oil over water-based leave-ins (LOC/LCO method).
    • Color-treated or chemically processed: Replenishes lipids stripped by chemical services.
    • Straight and wavy: Light; suits fine hair in small amounts.
    • Oily scalp: Lengths and ends only.
    • Sensitive scalp: Neutral carrier for scalp actives; patch test.
    • Dandruff-prone, mature or thinning: Carrier for rosemary, peppermint, or tea tree scalp treatments.

What are the benefits of Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp seed oil’s benefits are supported by clinical and review literature [1–3]:

    • Barrier repair: Ideal omega-6:omega-3 ratio replenishes barrier lipids [2].
    • Anti-inflammatory: Omega-3 and GLA calm eczema-prone and irritated skin [1].
    • Non-comedogenic: Rated 0; acne-friendly.
    • Dryness and itch relief: Clinical improvement in atopic dermatitis (dietary) [1].
    • Antioxidant: Vitamin E and chlorophyll.
    • Light texture: Absorbs quickly.
    • Hair and scalp nutrition: Strengthens and conditions.
    • Soap: Conditioning, silky lather; natural green tint.
