Despite its name, cetyl alcohol has nothing in common with drying “rubbing” alcohol: it is an emollient, thickener, and emulsion stabilizer that gives lotions and conditioners their smooth, velvety texture, forms a light lipid film on skin and hair, and helps oil and water stay blended. It is reviewed as safe by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel, and emollient lipids of this type support barrier comfort in dry-skin care. The lightest of the common fatty alcohols, it is ORY^®’s choice where stearyl or cetearyl alcohol would feel heavy.
