Lactate makes up about 12% of the skin’s natural moisturizing factor (NMF), and the amount in the outer skin layer tracks directly with hydration and suppleness. Unlike lactic acid, sodium lactate does not exfoliate — it is a pure humectant that binds more water than glycerin by weight with a lighter, non-tacky feel, and it buffers pH. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel has concluded lactates are safe in cosmetics. In your custom serum, toner, cream, lotion, cleanser, or mask, it replenishes the skin’s own moisture factor for every skin type and reduces the dryness of cleansing. In your shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, or scalp serum, it binds water to hair and scalp and balances pH.
