The slightly longer, higher-melting sibling of cetyl alcohol, it is a moisturizing emollient and structural agent — never a drying alcohol — that thickens creams, stabilizes emulsions, forms a protective lipid film, and gives conditioners body and slip. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel has concluded it is safe in cosmetics, and emollient lipids of this class support barrier comfort in dry-skin care. Where cetyl alcohol gives lightness, stearyl alcohol gives cushion and firmness. In your custom rich cream, body butter, cleansing balm, or balm and deodorant stick, it gives dry, mature, and sensitive skin a luxurious, protective texture. In your rich conditioner, mask, or styling cream, it adds body, slip, and softness for detangling. In your cosmetics, it structures lipsticks, cream sticks, and mascaras.
